Hairy oat-grass (English), Avoine pubescente (French), Flaumiger wiesenhafer (German). Perennial plant, average size, hairy. Stems erect, 30 - 100 cm high. Blade folded when young, hairy. Ligule 2 - 5 (- 8) mm long on the upper leaves, oblong. No auricles. Panicle-like inflorescence, long (10 - 20 cm), loose. Spikelets 2 - 4 flowered, including 2 to 3 aristate flowers, lemma with a long bent awn. The weight of 1000 seeds is 2.6 g (big seeds). Chromosome number: 2n = 14. Physiological peculiarities: maximum number of leaves per tiller: 3.7. Large distribution in climates of the temperate area. Like sunny and warm microclimates. Cold, warm resistant. Drought resistant. Restricted to dry soils. Species of poor soils, often calcareous. Encountered on a large range of soil textures. Often on well facing slopes or on excessively drained soils. Native to Europe except its southern part and to median Asia. |
