Soft brome (English), Brome mou (French), Weiche trespe (German). Annual plant, medium size, extremely hairy, cespitous. Stems erect, 15 - 100 cm high. Blade rolled when young, large, floppy, very hairy. Ligule short, truncate, slightly dentate. No auricles. Panicle-like inflorescence, loose, spreading during flowering and contracted afterwards, almost 10 cm long. Spikelets with 7 - 11 flowers, softly hairy, quite big, lemma with an awn as long as it. The weight of 1000 seeds is almost 3 g (big seeds). Chromosome number: 2n = 28. Found in cutting meadows and grassland. All temperate climates are suitable. This annual plant is resistant to variations in temperature. Resistant to drought by its seeds buried in the soil. In cutting meadows, optimum on normally drained to dry soils. In grazed grassland, only on dry soils. Species of soils moderately rich to rich in nutrient (mesotrophic to slightly eutrophic species). Mainly on a slightly acid to neutral soils. Large range of soil texture, from sand to clay. Native to Europe, West Asia and North Africa. Has become subcosmopolitan in temperate regions. From the lowlands to subalpine levels in mountain areas. |
