Description

Perennial plants, big size, hairless, cespitous. Stems erect, 100 - 250 cm high. Blade folded when young. Blade large (10 - 18 mm), flat, a little bit rough. Ligule short (3 - 6 mm), truncate and pointed in the middle. Spikelets 4 - 9 flowered, 6 - 12 mm long, compressed on the side. The weight of 1000 seeds is about 1.2 g (average seeds). Chromosome number: 2n = 60.

Temperature

Large climate range.

Soil

Optimum on very wet or boggy soils, on riversides. Optimum on alluvial or peat soils, nutrient-rich but large range. It tolerates strongly acid soils.

Distribution

Native to Europe, except its SW part, and mediane Asia. From the lowlands up to high elevations in mountain areas.
