Leguminosae
Common names
Brigalow.
Characteristics
A tree of variable size and shape with black or dark grey,
furrowed bark; leaves grey-green, grey or silvery grey, curved into a shallow
sickle shape; flowers in balls, yellow. The species forms scrubs similar
in structure to gidgee scrubs but somewhat taller and in a higher rainfall
zone (500 to 875 mm). Along its eastern boundaries, brigalow scrub merges
gradually into mixed softwood scrub or light rain forest. The leaves are
to some extent eaten as windfalls but cut material is refused. Sheep will
eat the very young suckers until they turn green and harden off (Everist,
1969). Brigalow is generally regarded as an undesirable species.
