Description

Tree 4 to 25 m high with trunk usually with knobby prickles. Young branchlets smooth. Prickles on branchlets in pairs just below each node, hooked, blackish, persistent, 2.5 to 7.0 mm long. Pinnae two to four pair; leaflets one to two pair, 10 to 26 mm long and 7 to 22 mm wide, ovate to elliptical. Flowers cream or white in aggregate or solitary spikes. Pods darkish brown, dehiscent, smooth, oblong, straight, 7 to 14.5 cm long, 1.5 to 2.4 cm wide. Seeds sublenticular, 12 to 13 mm in diameter (Brennan, 1959).

Distribution

Tanzania Botswana the Transvaal and Lesotho.

Characteristics

Occurs in deciduous bushland and wooded grassland in black soil areas, at elevations of 240 to 1 160 m. McKay (1968) showed that goats browse this plant and are able to reduce the density of young plants 5 to 30 cm high.
