Description

Tree about 10 to 15 m high, deciduous, crown flat, bark fissured and reticulate. Young branches have a grey pubescence. Leaves with a prominent gland on the upper side of the petiole; pinnae 6 to 20 pairs; leaflets 12 to 27 pairs, 2 to 6 mm long and 1 to 1.25 mm wide. Flowers white, bracteoles persistent. Pod oblong, 8 to 18 cm long, 2.5 to 3.5 cm wide, brown to purple. Seeds 8 to 12 mm long, 6 to 9 mm wide, flattened (Brennan, 1959).

Distribution

Occurs in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and southward to Botswana and the Transvaal in deciduous Combretum/Acacia mixed woodland at elevations of 80 to 2 130 metres (Brennan, 1959). It is particularly prevalent around termitaria.

Characteristics

The pods are eaten and the leaves browsed during the dry season (van Rensburg, 1968).
