Description

Deciduous tree growing to about 10 m. Purple flowers appear with young leaves.

Distribution

Native to West and Central Africa, occurring in Côte d'Ivoire, Togo, northern and southern Nigeria, Ghana and Zaire. It was introduced in Angola.

Characteristics

Fairly palatable (rated 1 to 2 out of 5) . Has a tendency to shed its leaves in the dry season. Occurs as clumps or thickets on the Accra Plains in Ghana, usually associated with termitaria belonging to the genus Macrotermes.
