LeguminosaeThe African acacias may be divided into 2 series and sub-genera. Subgenus Aculeiferum (= Genus Senegallia Pedley) belonging to the series Vulgares Bentham and subgenus Acacia belonging to the series Gummiferae Bentham (= Genus Acacia Pedley). Subgenus Aculeiferum includes the species with prickly recurved, claw-shaped thorns (A. ataxacantha, A. dudgeoni, A. erythrocalyx, A. gourmaensis, A. laeta, A. macrostachya, A. macrothyrsa, A. mellifera, A. polyacantha, A. senegal). Subgenus Acacia includes those species with straight axillary thorns (A. ehrenbergiana, A. nilotica, A. oerfota, A. seyal, A. sieberana, A. tortilis and the naturalized neo-tropical species A. farnesiana). Most of the introduced Australian acacias, on the contrary, belong to the series Phyllodineae, sub-genus Heterophyllum (Bentham, Vassal = Genus Racosperma Pedley) the "leaves" are actually enlarged petioles, the true pinnate leaves on the tip of the phyllodes are minute and early deciduous ; these represent some 800 of the 1250 species in the Genus Acacia s.l. ; virtually all are native to Australia ; most of the species introduced to the Sahel are thornless (with the exception of A. victoriae, pro parte, having thorny and thornless variations), they are : A. ampliceps (~ A.. sclerosperma), A. aneura, A. auriculiformis, A. bivenosa, A. brachycarpa, A. colei, A. coriacea, A. holosericea, A. ligulata, A. linaroides, A. neurocarpa, A peuce, A. salicina, A. sclerosperma, A. trachycarpa, A. tumida, A. victoriae. The exotic species belonging to the Phyllodineae series will be dealt with separately from the native Vulgares and Gummiferae.
