Leguminosae
Lock (1989) recorded 440 species of Crotalaria in Africa and 81
subspecies. FWTA records 58 species (Hutchinson et al., 1958) and FTEA 278
species (Gillett & al. in Milne-Redhead & Polhill, 1971). There
are probably around 30 species in the Sahelian and Sudanian ecozones. Most
species are unpalatable and quite a few are toxic. A few are consumed to a
larger or lesser degree by stock. Bartha (1970) recorded in Niger 4
species that may be considered as forage out of a total 18 species in the
genus and a national flora of 1040 species (Peyre de Fabrgues &
Lebrun, 1976).
