Description Loosely tufted erect perennial 70-120 cm high. Leaf-blades flat up to 20 cm long, 3 mm wide glabrous. Panicle narrow 15-25 cm long; loose to ± dense with slender ascending scaberulous branches. Spikelets lanceolate, 3-4 mm long, green or purple; lemma loosely pilose, awned from 1/3 way up the back. Habitat Upland forest margins and stream banks. Altitude range 2300-3000 m. Distribution Kenya; also in Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania and Ethiopia. Use Grazed by all domestic stock. Also used for thatching huts. Similar species Agrostis kilimandscharica but glumes of that species are not scabrid on the keel |
