Description

Densely tufted erect perennial with culms 6-45 cm high. Leaf-blades involute, stiff, scaberulous up to 10 cm long. Panicle narrowly oblong 2.5-15 cm long, open but rarely contracted; branches flexuous and sparsely asperulous. Spikelets 2.5-4.5 mm long, purplish; lemma pilose to glabrate, awned from 1/4 way up the back.

Habitat

Moist patches in the ericaceous belt usually on shallow soil overlying rocky ground

Altitude range

2880-4850 m.

Distribution

Kenya; also in Uganda and United Republic of Tanzania.

Use

Not recorded.

Similar Species

Agrostis kilimandscharica but that species usually has flat leaf-blades. Agrostis trachyphylla but that species has ± stiff appressed branches to the panicle.
