Description

Annual with geniculately ascending culms l0-80 cm high. Leaf-blades flat 5-26 cm long, 2-7 mm wide. Ligule membranous 1.5-2.5 mm long. Inflorescence of 2 terminal digitate usually densely hairy racemes 3-13 cm long. Internodes and pedicels linear or almost so, ciliate to densely hairy, sessile spikelets 6-11 mm long, lower glume lanceolate to elliptic ± flat on the back and evenly nerved between the keels, winged or not, long hairy, awn of the lemma 1.2-2.6 cm long. Pedicelled spikelets lanceolate 4-8.5 mm long rounded on the back, evenly nerved, winged, glabrous to hairy, 2-awned from the tip with the longer awn up to 5 mm long.

Altitude range

1400-3000 m.

Distribution

Kenya; also in Uganda and Ethiopia.

Use

Valuable for grazing and fodder.

Similar Species

Andropogon amethystinus but that species is a perennial.
