Description

Tufted perennial 50-250 cm high. Leaf-blades 10-40 cm long and 2-7 mm wide. Inflorescence a loose false panicle made up of paired racemes, these 3-4 cm long. Internodes and pedicels filiform and ciliate. Spikelets 4-7 mm long arranged loosely on the racemes. The sessile spikelets with a 5-25 mm long geniculate awn from the lemma. The pedicelled spikelet with or without an awn up to 6 mm long.

Habitat

Seasonally flooded grassland.

Altitude range

1300 m and higher elsewhere.

Distribution

Kenya; also from United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Angola and Democratic Republic of the Congo to Mauritania.

Use

Grazed when young but of low palatability at maturity.
