Description

Perennial densely tufted or on a short thick rhizome, culms 10-110 cm high. Leaf-blades flat 2-40 cm long, 1-5 mm wide, with short sheath auricles 0.5 mm long and lacerated membranous ligule 0.5-1.5 mm long this sometimes accompanied by a line of long hairs up to 3 mm long. Inflorescence golden brown of 2-9 racemes borne on an axis up to 4 cm long; racemes 2-8 cm long, villous with brown hairs. Internodes and pedicels linear, fulvously ciliate. Sessile spikelets 5-8 mm long, brown, with the lower glume ± flattened on the back, awn of the lemma 8-20 mm long. Pedicelled spikelet lanceolate, 4-8 mm rarely up to 10 mm long, acute to mucronate.

Habitat

Upland grassland and forest clearings often on wet ± water-logged soils.

Altitude range

2100-3300 m.

Distribution

Kenya; also in United Republic of Tanzania and Ethiopia

Use

Grazed by stock; it could be of high grazing value, however it has a low productivity even with application of fertilizer.

Similar Species

Eulalia aurea in having brown villous hairs on the racemes, but spikelets of a pair are smaller (3.5-4.5 mm long) and similar.
