Description

Straggling perennial 60-210 cm high with wiry culms much branched above. Leaf-blades flat, linear lanceolate 3-15 cm long and 3-7 mm wide, rounded at the base, without auricles but with a membranous ligule up to 1.2 mm long. Inflorescence of paired racemes or rarely 3 racemes terminal on the culm branches, racemes l.2-5 cm long. Internodes and pedicels clavate, inflated above, shiny and partly ciliate at both margins. Sessile spikelets glabrous 5.5-6.5 mm long, lower glume narrowly lanceolate, depressed between the keels, awn of lemma 9-12 mm long. Pedicelled spikelets glabrous, lanceolate, 5-5.5 mm long, acute to mucronate.

Habitat

Coastal swampy spots on clay under sand.

Altitude range

0-100 m.

Distribution

Kenya; also in United Republic of Tanzania.

Use

Eaten by cattle and goats.

Similar Species

Andropogon canaliculatus in inflorescence type but that species has erect culms.
