Description

Erect tufted perennial 10-90 cm high with pubescent culm internodes. Leaf-blades flat or folded, 5-20 cm long and up to 5 mm wide with a blunt tip, sheaths compressed near the bottom. Panicle spike-like 5-15 cm long. Spikelets with subequal awned glumes 5-9 mm long, body of the lemma 5-7 mm long with an articulation just below the branching of the awns these subequal and 2.5-3.5 cm long.

Habitat

Shallow soils in wooded grassland.

Altitude range

1300-1500 m (as from 400 m elsewhere).

Distribution

Kenya; also from northern Uganda and United Republic of Tanzania and throughout tropical Africa.

Use

Grazed, but not highly palatable.

Similar Species

Aristida congesta but that species has a clear twisted column at the top of the lemma.
