Description

Tufted perennial up to 40 cm high and rounded glabrous leaf-sheath bases. Leaf-blades convolute rather rigid up to 34 cm long. Panicle open to loosely contracted with branches bare for 1/2 their length. Spikelets with unequal glumes the lower 8-12 mm long, the upper 13-18 mm long, both acuminate, body of the lemma 6-8 mm long passing into the twisted column without any articulation, column 7-10 mm long, awns subequal, 25-40 mm long.

 

Habitat

Dry bushland.

Altitude range

± 900m.

Distribution

Kenya; also from Somalia.

Use

Grazed when young; of some importance for grazing in dry areas.

Similar Species

Aristida sieberana but that has an articulation to the lemma.
