Description

Tufted annual 90-150 cm high, glabrous except for a flake of wool at the auricles. Leaf-blades flat or involute up to 45 cm long and up to 4 mm wide. Panicle up to 50 cm long, lax with spikelets borne on long thin pedicels. Spikelets up to 20 cm long, glumes unequal the lower 5-7 mm long, the upper 14-20 mm long; body of the lemma 7-9 mm long with articulation between it and the awn-column; column 1.5-3 cm long, the central awn 3.5-6 cm long, the laterals a little shorter.

Habitat

Ruderal species.

Altitude range

± 1200-1350 m.

Distribution

May appear in Kenya; also from United Republic of Tanzania southwards; it is recorded from W. and N. E. tropical Africa.

Use

Grazed when young. Of some importance for grazing in dry areas.
