Description

Spreading and mat-forming, annual, with slender ascending culms 20-50 cm high. Leaf-blades flat, 3.7-13 cm long, 3.5-7.5 mm wide, acuminate, hispid with tubercle-based hairs. Inflorescence of 4-7 stiffly ascending spikes each 1.4-3.3 cm long. Spikelets 3-4-flowered, 4-4.2 mm in length; the awn on the upper glume 1/2-3/4 the length of the glume; lemmas cuspidate; anthers 0.4-0.6 mm long; grain 0.7-0.8 mm long, broadly obovate, finely granular- striate.

Habitat

Sand dunes, and coral outcrops on the sea shores.

Altitude range

Sea level.

Distribution

Kenya; also in United Republic of Tanzania, Seychelles and Mauritius.

Use

Not known but could be as palatable as Dactyloctenium aegyptiun.

Similar Species

Dactyloctenium aegyptium, however that species is usually more robust and has slightly larger grains which are clearly transversely rugose.
