Description

Coarse, tufted annual with erect culms 30-200 cm high. Leaf-blades 10-30 cm long and 4-10 mm wide; ligule a ciliate fringe. Inflorescence lanceolate, purple, 8-25 cm long made up of several-rowed racemes closely spaced along a central axis. Each raceme is 1-4 cm long bearing crowded spikelets. Spikelets elliptic, 1.5-2.5 mm long (rarely more), pubescent to hispid; lower lemma acute, upper lemma 1.5-2.5 mm long.

Habitat

Stream-sides on water-logged clays.

Altitude range

420-1820 m.

Distribution

Kenya; also from United Republic of Tanzania; not known elsewhere.

Use

Of low grazing value in limited areas.

Similar Species

Echinochloa frumentacea, however in that species ligules are absent and the inflorescence are greenish.
