Description

Perennial climbing or prostrate herb, 0.6-2.1 m long; stems pubescent with spreading or adpressed hairs. Leaflets 3, ovate or ovate-triangular, 0.9-8.5 cm long, 0.5-7.5 cm wide, occasionally slightly 3-lobed, rounded to long-acuminate and mucronulate at the apex, rounded or truncate at the base, sparsely to densely adpressed pilose on both surfaces; stipules ovate-oblong, ribbed. Inflorescence short axillary racemes; 1-10-flowered; standard variously pink, magenta or bluish-purple, sometimes greenish outside. Pods oblong, somewhat curved, glabrous to densely silky pubescent; seeds dark reddish-brown, mottled black, usually ellipsoid or oblong-reniform, compressed. Calyx entirely glabrous or only sparsely adpressed pilose. Pods glabrous at maturity, 7-9 cm long.

Habitat

Bushland and dry evergreen forest.

Altitude range

1150-1800 m.

Distribution

Kenya; also United Republic of Tanzania; not known elsewhere.

Use

Well grazed by livestock.
