Acacia georginae F.M. Bail

Home

Leguminosae

Common names

Georgina gidgee.

Description

A small, rather gnarled tree. Pods broad, flat, curled.

Distribution

The species is almost confined to the basin of the Georgina River and parts of the Northern Territory.

Characteristics

Leaves are grazed and the pods are eagerly sought by sheep and cattle. However, the seeds and pods are very poisonous, the leaves less so. Some trees appear to be non-toxic (Everist, 1969). Oelrichs and McEwan (1962) isolated and identified the toxic principle as fluoracetic acid. The plant is nevertheless considered a valuable fodder in the area.
