Hungarian brome or awnless brome (English), Brome inerme (French), Unbegrannte trespe (German). Perennial plant, robust, hairless, with long rhizomes. Stems erect, 30 - 100 (- 160) cm high. Blade rolled when young, large (5 - 12 mm), rough. Ligule very short (1 mm), truncate. No aurieles. Panicle-like inflorescence, oblong, with erect branches, half-verticillate. Spilekets with 5 - 8 flowers very exceptionally awned (awn: 4 nun maximum). The weight of 1000 seeds is 3.0 to 4.0 g (big seeds). Chromosome number: 2n = 56. Adapted to temperate regions (very abundant in Hungary !). Does not tolerate shade. Very resistant to cold. Adapted to dry climates and very resistant to drought, moisture sensitive. Valorizes well the nutrients. Cultivated on good soils. Native to median and northern Europe as well as temperate Asia. Mostly in the lowlands. |
