Description

Densely tufted perennial, 20-80 cm high with silky tomentose basal sheaths. Leaf-blades flat, 5-40 cm long and 3-11 mm wide. Inflorescence of 2-16 racemes (rarely more)on an axis 2-18 cm long; racemes l-5.5 cm in length with a pubescent to villous triquetrous rhachis. Spikelets borne singly (or sometimes paired at the base of the raceme) are 3-4.5 mm long, pubescent to villous and supported on a short greenish stipe.

 

Habitat

Damp soils and black clays.

Altitude range

0-1700 m.

Distribution

Kenya; also from northern Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Ethiopia and Somalia.

Use

A good grazing grass.

Similar Species

Brachiaria nigropedata but the spikelets of that species have a black stipe.
