FIELD FOOD CROPS: MAIZE
Activities. AGPC supports maize production improvement through FAO Field Programme projects in many countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China and Eritrea. Maize production improvement is also an important component of many projects implemented through FAO's Special Programme for Food Security, emergency operations and rehabilitation activities and Telefood projects.

The Tropical Asian Maize Network (TAMNET) was established in 1993 to strengthen collaboration between national institutions in maize research and development. TAMNET aims at increasing maize production and productivity, particularly through hybrids. Founding members are Bangladesh, Cambodia, People's Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lank, Thailand and Vietnam. In 1998 CIMMYT's regional office in Bangkok took responsibility for coordinating technical activities, including hybrid trials. Major outputs include hybrids identified and adopted by farmers, newsletters, case studies and training activities. [TAMNET 2003 Trial]

Databases. A maize database under preparation will provide the main maize producer countries with information on maize-growing environments, production statistics, national breeding programmes and maize varieties.
