FIELD FOOD CROPS: CROPPING SYSTEMS
AGPC is currently implementing or participates in a range of activities related to cropping systems. For example:
Conservation agriculture (CA) is being promoted through the FAO Agricultural Department's multidisciplinary Informal Working Group on Conservation Agriculture. CA uses a set of practices based on zero or minimum tillage, use of direct drills, varied crop rotation, maintenance of permanent soil cover, and weed management
Sustainable wheat-based cropping systems are being developed using AGPC's "Explore on-farm" methodology. This involves understanding crop/environment interaction, improving management and increasing diversification. It proposes on-farm trials and training for facilitators and farmers. With CIMMYT and national wheat agronomists, Explore on-farm is being adapted for Central Asia
Rice-wheat systems in South Asia are one of the world's principal agricultural production systems. With the Rice-Wheat Consortium for the Indo-Gangetic Plains, AGPC is helping accelerate development of technologies to overcome major production constraints
