AGPC's Field Food Crops Group supports the efforts of national programmes to achieve sustainable increases in crop production. Its overall aim is to strengthen food security and alleviate poverty by introducing improved crop-production techniques and by promoting policies that help farmers adopt new technologies. It gives support and guidance to national research and extension services.
The Group pays special attention to cereals - such as rice, maize, wheat and sorghum - and to various food legumes, as well as development of promising "orphan crops" for wider dissemination. It promotes integrated crop management systems for major agro-ecological zones and addresses technical issues related to production systems.
