THE INTERNATIONAL
TASK FORCE ON HYBRID RICE (INTAFOHR)
The
INTAFOHR was jointly established by FAO and IRRI in 1995. The
current members of the Task Force include Bangladesh, China,
France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Myanmar, the Philippines, Sri
Lanka, Viet Nam, CIAT, FAO and IRRI.
-
To promote free exchange of germplasm, information and data
from on-going research and development programmes concerning
hybrid rice among interested partners.
- To intensify collaborative strategic research on hybrid
rice.
- To organize training, monitoring tours and meetings/workshops
on hybrid rice breeding and F1 seed production.
- To strengthen the public and private hybrid seed industry
and linkage between hybrid rice research centres and hybrid
seed industries.
- To provide expertise and consultancy services in research
and hybrid seed production.
The
INTAFOHR consists of:
- A Task Force Coordination Centre: IRRI, Los Banos, the
Philippines Coordinator: Dr. Saint S. Virmani
- A National Liaison Centre

THE
WORKING GROUP ON ADVANCE RICE BREEDING (GRUMEGA)
In
1994 FAO assisted the member countries in the region to
establish the GRUTHA or the Working Group on Hybrid Rice
in Latin America and the Caribbean. The main objective of
GRUTHA is to promote the exchange of experience, scientific
information and germplasm among the participating countries.
During their third meeting in Goiania, in September 1999,
Member Countries of GRUTHA agreed to merge their group's
activities with other Working Groups to form the Working
Group on Advance Rice Breeding (GRUMEGA), which covers other
advance methods in rice breeding including the use of biotechnology.
This new group holds a general meeting every three years;
in addition, annual experience exchange tours are carried
out in different countries.

THE
INTER-REGIONAL COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH NETWORK ON RICE IN THE
MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE AREAS (MED-RICE)
MED-RICE
(Inter-regional Co-operative Research Network on Rice in the
Mediterranean Climate Areas) was created in 1990 by FAO, and
especially by the Regional Office for Europe (REU), Regional
Office for the Near-East (RNE) and the Crop and Grassland
Service (AGPC), with collaboration from INRA and National
Agricultural Research Centres (NARS). This network is part
of the inter-regional and regional networks on rice and field
projects, and it is supported by the International Rice Commission
(IRC) and the Rice Development Programme (RDP) of FAO.
The
objective of MED-RICE is to promote scientific
exchanges among rice scientists in the mediterranean area
and in the other world regions with a mediterranean climate.

COOPERATIVE NETWORK ON WETLAND DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT/ INLAND
VALLEY SWAMPS (WEDEM/IVS)
The
WEDEM/IVS was established by the Regional Office for Africa
(RAF) in 1988 in Accra, Ghana.
Objective
To
promote the development and use of inland valley swamps for
increased food production, as an alternative to the destructive
slash-and-burn shifting cultivation systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Organisation
•
IVS is a sub-group of the WEDEM
• Interested countries in the region: Sub-Saharan African
countries
• RAF is responsible for its coordination. Technical officer:
Moïse Sonou, Senior Water Development Officer, RAF.

THE MEMORANDUM
OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN FAO AND IRRI:
The Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) between FAO and IRRI for the International
Task Force on Hybrid Rice (INTAFOHR) was signed in March 1999.
The MOU aimed at strengthening the present collaboration and
cooperation between the two agencies within the framework of
the FAO/IRRI-sponsored INTAFOHR in order to expedite wide adoption
of hybrid rice technologies. The INTAFOHR will bring together
IRRI (possessing capacity in developing hybrid rice technology),
FAO (possessing capacity in strengthening seed production and
technology transfer), and any interested country, to develop
and use hybrid rice technologies to increase rice production.
BETWEEN
FAO AND WARDA:
The
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between FAO and WARDA for
the implementation of the Programme for Rapid Rice Technology
Diffusion in West Africa (RARIDWA) was signed in February 2000.
The MOU would strengthen the transfer of technologies generated
by WARDA under the framework of the Special Programme for Food
Security (SPFS) in West African countries.
