FAO's Grassland and Pasture work promotes sustainable technologies for grassland utilization by pastoralists in arid, semi-arid and cool temperate systems. It supports fodder production in high-potential rural and peri-urban areas, and maintenance of biodiversity in grasslands, especially in low-potential areas and environments at risk.
Networking is facilitated as well as close cooperation among regional and national programmes, the development of pasture and fodder crops databases, and provision of information, guidelines and methodologies to FAO member countries.
A key focus is on information and technology transfer, training and demonstration, and development of national capacities. Major resources developed include:
Publications for scientists, farmers, the general public and policy makers
A series of illustrated booklets specifically for young people on the sustainable use of natural resources
An on-line database of pasture resource profiles for more than 80 countries
A searchable Grassland Species database of more than 600 grass and forage legume species
