  • Production ecology

Rice is grown at varying altitudes. During 1995-2000 period, it is estimated that 19 percent of the harvested rice area come from rainfed lowland ecologies and 74 percent come from upland ecologies. The Main climates are Tropical Wet and Dry, and Tropical Wet, while the Main soil associations are AC = Acrisols, Alisols, Plinthosols; LX = Lixisols

CROP MANAGEMENT
In upland conditions, rice is usually directed seeded in association or mixture with other crops. Mono upland crop is found in the upland - cotton rotation systems. In rainfed lowland and irrigated ecologies transplanting is the dominant method of crop establishment.

MAIN PRODUCTION CONSTRAINTS

There are several constraints to sustainable rice production in Cote D'Ivoire. Following are the majors:
  • Dominance of upland shifting cultivation
  • Drought stress, lows soil fertility, erosion of soil and soil fertility in upland areas which is the dominant rice ecology
  • Blast and weed competition
  • Inadequate and Irregular input supplies: seeds, fertilizer and credit
  • Lack of well-defined rice policies: rice has been given low priority in national policy
  • Weak research and extension support
  • Poor road networks and marketing systems
