Promotion of strategic crop research in developing countries is a small but important component of the AGPC work programme. The Service's activities involve technical collaboration in research and technology transfer, and collaboration with IARCs, national programmes and FAO Regional Offices. Examples:
Contributions to strategic surveys and studies to guide investment and policies related to plant breeding research and its application
An information paper on sustainable utilization of plant genetic resources and a seminar on molecular characterization of genetic diversity for the CGRFA
Plant Breeding News, an e-newsletter co-produced with Cornell University (1,400 subscribers) offering information on a variety of plant breeding topics
A workshop on farmers' participatory barley research and methodologies organized by ICARDA
A technical paper, Genotype x environment interactions, which explores opportunities in plant breeding
A Research Workshop on Breeding for Improved Phosphorus Uptake (with ICRISAT and CIAT)
A scientific review with CIAT and IPGRI of molecular characterization of germplasm, involving a number of prominent molecular biologists
Promotion of horticultural research through an International Horticulture Research Conference and the International Horticulture Congress
Research and development initiatives for date palm, cactus pear, mushrooms, citrus, fodder oats in Himalayan countries, and horticulture in West and Central Africa
