AGPC develops strategies and promotes technologies for sustainable crop and grassland production systems. It is preparing case studies on rice biodiversity, and developing an online database on world rice varieties. The Service promotes collection of data on native species with high production potential, the exchange of technologies and information among regions with similar ecologies, and the production of guidelines on biodiversity conservation.
The Service also produces guidelines for management of low-input grassland systems, and develops strategies for the maintenance of grasslands biodiversity. Its work on grassland biodiversity is being enhanced through an FAO/Netherlands partnership programme, focused on South African grassland ecosystems.
AGPC also helps develop FAO strategies and policies on biodiversity through active participation in the FAO Interdepartmental Working Group on Biodiversity.
