IPM Expansion

The experience gained in IPM implementation in rice can be extended to other crops and to other regions where non-sustainable crop protection practices occur, in particular, the mis- and over-use of pesticides. In many national programmes in Asia, IPM implementation is expanding to cotton, vegetables, legumes and maize. FAO assists with its transfer to other regions and crops through the exchange of trainers and the gaining of first-hand experience in Asia. A new, Dutch-funded regional IPM programme on vegetables recently started in five Asian countries and a similar programme on cotton may start soon.

After the Global IPM Meeting held in Asia in 1993, countries from other Regions initiated pilot IPM-participatory activities. Rice IPM training programmes in Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso are showing that the concepts and methodologies used for IPM implementation in Asia are adaptable to African conditions. In the Sudan, an IPM project for vegetables, wheat and cotton has recently introduced the concept of Farmers' Field Schools with excellent results.
