INIAP is the institution in charge of agricultural research in Ecuador. It has seven experimental station around the country, being two of them located in the Andean highlands where wheat is mostly cultivated: Santa Catalina (Pichincha province) and Chuquipata (Cañar province). Wheat production in Ecuador satisfies only 1% to 6% of inner demand (the rest is imported). Wheat research is not a high priority for the country. Some research activities are done in wheat breeding and crop management. Several wheat cultivars has been realised and some seed production is carried on at the experimental stations. INIAP supports technology transference done by public and private extension agents.
