Abstract 596New dietary protein sources for animal production in South East Asia.Devendra,-C Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Inst., (MARDI), Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia. New dietary protein sources represent increasingly important feed ingredients for ensuring protein supply, high performance and reduced cost of feeding animals in South East Asia. These account for approximately 15 million tonnes per year of plant origin, representing about 3 per cent of the total production of feeds from crop production. They include sal seed meal, palm kernel cake, rubber seed meal, forages from cassava, pigeon pea, leucaena, feather meal and poultry litter. The crude protein contents for the plant proteins were in the range 9.2 to 32.0 per cent. The conclusion that emerges concerning their utilization is that approximately 5-40 per cent dietary levels can be used for ruminants with no loss of performance. Wider use of these feed proteins necessitates overcoming present inherent limitations to provide more economic feeding systems and efficiency in the use of the total feed and animal genetic resources of the region.
