Animal production was measured over the growing season (Oct.-June) from 4 grass pastures fertilized annually with 170 kg N/ha in coastal S.E. Queenland from 1982-87. The pastures were grazed at 7 yearling steers/ha from mid-spring until mid-autumn and at 3.5 steers/ha thereafter until animals lost wt in winter. Animal production was similar from pastures of Setaria sphacelata cv. Kazungula and Narok, S. sphacelata var. splendida cv. CPI 15899, and Chloris gayana cv. Callide, with an av. production over 6 years of approx. 820 kg liveweight/ha. There was much more variation in animal production between years than there was between the different grasses. There was a gradual invasion of Pennisetum clandestinum, particularly in plots of Callide which did not persist as well as the Setaria spp.

This abstract relates to the following species:

Chloris gayana, Pennisetum clandestinum, Setaria sphacelata
