Advances in animal feeds and feeding in the tropics. Proceedings of the Tenth Annual Conference of the Malaysian Society of Animal Production, Genting Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia, April 2-4, 1987 [edited by Hutagalung, R.I.; Chen, C.P.; Wan Mohamed, W.E.; Law, A.T.; Sivarajasingam, S.]. 1987, 165-169; 10 ref. Serdang, Malaysia; Malaysian Society of Animal Production.

In a 3 X 3 X 2 feeding trial with 36 lactating Friesian cows whole cottonseed (19% ether extract) was given to replace maize and soyabean meal in diets at 0, 15 or 30% of dietary DM. Three sources of roughage (maize silage, lucerne haylage and cottonseed hulls) and 2 concentrations of calcium (0.69 and 1.29% of dietary DM) were given. Roughage was given at 40% of DM in all diets. Across roughages and calcium concentrations, dietary DM intake decreased linearly with increasing cottonseed. Milk yield and percentages of milk fat and protein were least with 30% cottonseed. Calcium in the form of limestone was ineffective in correcting the problem of reduced milk fat.
