Basal diets given to 5 groups of broiler chicks 1 day old contained rice polish 15.0, wheat bran 5.5, groundnut oilcake 20.0, gingelly [sesame] oilcake 8.0, fish meal 7.0, meat meal 5.0 and mineral mixture 2.0% together with maize 37.5, 0, 0, 0 or 9.4, jowar (Sorghum vulgare [S. bicolor]) 0, 37.5, 0, 0 or 9.4, ragi (Eleusine coracana) 0, 0, 37.5, 0 or 9.4, and cumbu (Pennisetum typhoides [P. americanum]) 0, 0, 0, 37.5 or 9.4%. Body weight at 56 days old was 1185, 1277, 1369, 1356 and 1289 g, respectively. The chicks took 2.53, 2.47, 2.50, 2.40 and 2.52 kg feed/kg gain. The differences between groups were not significant.
