Abstract 284The effect of supplementing cereal straws with urea, Trifolium hay and noug meal on feed intake and liveweight gain of growing crossbred heifers.Olayiwole,-MB; Butterworth,-MH; Sayers,-AR; Olorunju,-SAS National Animal Production Research Inst., Ahmadu Bello Univ., P.M.B. 1096, Zaria, Nigeria. ILCA-Bulletin. 1986, No. 24, 18-20; 8 ref. Different combinations of urea, Trifolium tembense hay and noug (Guizotia abyssinica) meal were fed individually to growing Holstein X zebu heifers as supplements to diets based on teff [Eragrostis tef] or wheat straw. Diets were isonitrogenous and crushed maize was added to ensure that energy was not limiting. Total DM intake increased when G. abyssinica was included in diets and decreased when urea was given. T. tembense hay increased the intake of diets based on wheat straw but did not have any effect on the intake of E. tef based diets. Weight gains increased when T. tembense was included in diets. Addition of urea to diets without G. abyssinica increased the rate of weight gain, and this was increased further when G. abyssinica was added. All differences were significant.
