Crude protein in castor oil beans (Ricinus communis) was 32.8, 35.2 or 39.8% depending on whether the beans were whole, defatted or decorticated, ether extract was 15.5, crude fibre 11.4, ash 5.2, nitrogen-free extract 31.5, calcium 0.008, phoshporus 0.25 and magnesium 0.005%, carotene 11.3 mg/kg, gross energy 5.05 kcal/g and hydrocyanic acid 11.2 mg/kg. The ricin component was destroyed by roasting at 140øC for 20 min; crude protein was decreased from 32.8 to 24.4% by roasting.
