In field trials in 1982-3, Panicum maximum cv. Likoni pasture was grazed by Holstein X Zebu cattle with an initial liveweight of 127 kg until they reached approx. 250 kg. The 10 treatments were 5 stocking rates (2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 cattle/ha) with 2 N rates for each stocking rate (0 and 80, 80 and 120, 80 and 120, 120 and 140 and 160 and 240 kg N/ha, resp.). Highest daily liveweight gains were obtained with 120 kg N/ha and stocking rates of 3 or 4 cattle/ha (0.398 and 0.388 kg/animal). Lowest liveweight gains were obtained with 5 animals and 120 kg N/ha (0.282 kg/animal). Liveweight gains and forage availability responded to N rates ó160 kg/ha.
