Mayaguezano de Agricultura Tropical, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Memoria,-Asociacion-Latinoamericana-de-Produccion-Animal. 1982, 17, 7-12; 9 ref. In trials 60 White Leghorn chickens were given diets based on fish meal and molasses in which maize was replaced by 0, 17.5 or 35% Dioscorea alata and D. esculenta meals. DM intake increased (P < 0.05) with increasing amounts of D. alata in the diet. Liveweight gain and laying frequency were not affected by the treatments but D. alata meal at 35% increased (P < 0.01) feed intake/g egg. In general, chickens given D. alata had greater DM intake and laying frequency. Giving D. esculenta at 35% had a toxic effect in some chickens. This abstract relates to the following species:Dioscorea alata
