 | Abstract 409 Evaluation of pastures of Guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacques) and Jaragua grass (Hyparrhenia rufa (Ness) Stapf).Gomide,-JA; Leao,-MI; Obeid,-JA; Zago,-CP Departamento Zootecnia, Universidade Federal de Vicosa, 36.570 Vicosa, MG, Brazil. Revista-daSociedade-Brasileira-deZootecnia. 1984, 13: 1, 1-9; 13 ref. In a field trial in 1979-81, Gir-Guzera steers (133 kg initial liveweight) were grazed on (a) P. maximum with Macroptilium atropurpureum and Centrosema pubescens or (b) H. rufa both of which were given 0 or 60 kg N/ha. Higher liveweight gain/day and gain/ha and carrying capacity were shown by (a) than by (b), mainly in the absence of N; (a) was also superior in CP content, DM digestibility and intake. N application increased daily liveweight gain and CP content for (b). Annual liveweight gains for (a) and (b) were 224 and 183 kg and 381 and 248 kg/ha without and with N, resp. This abstract relates to the following species:Hyparrhenia rufa, Panicum maximum
