Abstract 446Liveweight response of cattle grazing native pasture in south east Queensland when supplemented with urea/molasses in winter and spring.Foster,-AH; Blight,-GW Queensland Dep. of Primary Industries, Bundaberg, Qld. 4670, Australia. Tropical-Grasslands. 1984, 18: 3, 131-137; 20 ref. Cattle grazed during 1973-9 on native pasture dominated by Heteropogon contortus with Aristida leptopoda and Bothriochloa bladhii. They were supplemented for 173 days during winter and spring in 3 consecutive yr with 50 g urea and 194 g molasses/day, and in 2 subsequent yr with 30 g urea and 207 g molasses/day. The supplement reduced daily liveweight loss of yearlings by a mean of 0.39 kg and increased liveweight gain of 2-yr-old cattle by 0.08 kg/head. The liveweight advantage was maintained in the post-supplement period and supplemented cattle were 37 kg heavier than unsupplemented cattle at 30 months.
