Abstract 537The effect of grass species on animal performance.Jones,-RJ CSIRO, Division of Tropical Crops and Pastures, Annual Report 1981-82. 1982, 104. Brisbane, Australia. Urochloa mosambicensis and Rhodes grass cv. Callide were sown in 1977 with a mixture of legume seed containing Macroptilium atropurpureum cv. Siratro, Stylosanthes hamata and S. viscosa into native pasture containing predominantly speargrass (Heteropogon contortus) and kangaroo grass (Themeda australis). All pastures were fertilized with 100 kg superphosphate/ha every 2nd yr. Mean pasture composition of S. hamata in the Rhodes grass, U. mosambicensis and control treatments were 38, 53 and 71%, resp. Mean liveweight gains were 129, 157 and 143 kg/steer, resp. For the 3 grass treatments grown alone and fertilized annually with 100 kg N/ha, liveweight gains at the same stocking rate were 87, 134 and 83 kg/steer for Rhodes grass, U. mosambicensis and speargrass, resp.
