Effect of stocking rate and grazing procedure on animal performance and sward composition of irrigated Kikuyu grass/Kenya white clover pastures.

An irrigated Kikuyu grass/white clover cv. Kenya pasture was continuously or rotationally (ratio of days grazed:days rested of 5:10, 5:25 or 1:23) grazed by 7.4 or 11.1 steers/ha from Oct. 1980 to mid-1981. Daily liveweight gains/head were greater at the lower stocking rate and between Oct. and Feb. than between Feb. and June. The 1:23 day grazing system gave the lowest wt. gains in the first and the highest gains in the second half of the grazing period and the lowest carcass quality. Carcass wt. and finish were better with the lower stocking rate. The clover content of the pasture decreased from Oct. to mid-March with all treatments but then tended to increase slightly with the high and to continue to decrease with the low stocking rate.
