Treatment of Panicum maximum var. maximum, P. maximum var. trichoglume and Chloris gayana with anhydrous NH3 (1.5 or 3.0% on a DW basis) at 20 ø C for 4 weeks increased CP, ash, cellulose and DM digestibility and acetyl bromide lignin digestibility but reduced NDF, hemicellulose, acid detergent lignin and silica. ADF was either increased or decreased by either treatment depending on species and age of material. 3.0% NaOH gave slightly higher DM recovery, DDM recovery and in vitro DM digestibility than 1.5% NaOH.
