Abstract 115Underexploited tropical feedingstuffs for poultry.D'Mello,-JPF Department of Agricultural Biochemistry, Edinburgh School of Agriculture, West Mains Road, Edinburgh EH9 3JG, UK. World-Review-of-Animal-Production. 1987, 23: 3, 3, 6, 37-43; 42 ref. Recent nutritional data on tropical legume grains, miscellaneous seeds and byproducts of tree crops, cereal byproducts, roots, tubers and leaf meals are reviewed. The toxic constituents of these feeds and methods of detoxification and improvement of nutritional value are discussed. Development of detoxification procedures has ensured significant roles in the future for several legume grains, rubber seed meal, mango seed meal, stabilized rice bran and cassava root meal. The prospects for other underexploited feeds depend upon development of methods to inactivate heat stable anti-nutritional factors in these feeds. Scope for a significant role for leaf meals in poultry diets now appears to be unlikely despite recent advances in detoxification. This abstract relates to the following species:
