Boletim-deIndustria-Animal. 1985, 42: 1, 85-92; 12 ref. During the dry season (July to October), 36 heifers of Gir, Red Sindhi and Guzerat breeds, grazing a pasture of Guinea grass (Panicum maximum) were given ground maize, cottonseed meal, both or not given supplement. A factorial 3 X 4 study was used. At the end of supplementation, 84 days, weight gain was noted for 180 more days. The average daily weight gains for 84 days were 250, 224 and 181 g for the respective breeds. Supplements of maize and cottonseed meal showed significant differences in weight gain at the level of 0.01 and 0.05 of probability, respectively. Breeds were significantly different at 0.05 level of probablity and Gir breed had the best weight gain in relation to Guzerat breed. Analysis at 180 days revealed an average daily weight gain of 564, 524 and 433 g, respectively. Supplementation during the dry season did not reduce the age at 1st calving.
