Yields of sorghum and millet and stover consumption by livestock in the Subhumid Zone of Nigeria.

In the Abet area of central Nigeria sorghum yielded grain at about 1 t/ha and vegetative DM at about 4.3 t/ha. Millet yields were more variable with corresponding values of 0.740 and 3.0 t/ha. The percentage crude protein (CP) contents of sorghum leaves and stalks were 4.5 and 1.1, respectively, and 6.8 and 1.8 for millet (DM basis). The leaves of both crops contained favourable amounts of phosphorus and relatively narrow Ca:P ratios. Significant large positive correlations existed between grain and DM yields for both crops; between sorghum grain and total stover CP; and sorghum grain and leaf CP. During an 8-week grazing period following grain harvest, cattle consumed 49% of the total sorghum stover and 57% of the total millet stover. This represented 61% and 81% of sorghum and millet original leaf DM, and 40% and 47% of sorghum and millet original stalk DM, respectively.
